Bombay- Another Gujarat in the Making

As is common knowledge, Bombay’s Shivaji Park was recently sullied by Narendra Modi’s presence. Unfortunately, Bombay didn’t think so. The turnout of people, hanging onto every word of his speech was phenomenal. The Park was packed, with people standing on tiptoe for a glimpse of the despotic mastermind behind the Gujarat genocide. As depressing as the outcome of the Gujarat elections was, the Shivaji park incident was worse in a way. It was an ugly reminder of how the cosmopolitan city of Bombay is no better than a village in the Panchmahals. A not-so-subtle hint to the Muslims of the city, state and country.
Cut to my ongoing house hunt. A couple of days ago, I had seen a rather nice place in the same building that I’m staying in right now, which I was interested in renting. I spoke to the landlady who was reasonably pleasant, showed me the apartment, offered me some furniture and even offered to have a carpenter come in and fix some stuff before I moved in. And then, today, when I was about to go and pay them a deposit, her son retracted the offer. My confusion was natural and I immediately asked my friend to get in touch with the broker to see what had suddenly gone wrong. No prizes for guessing the reason. It was the realization that I belong to the hated community, of course. And this from cultured, educated people who share their building with Muslims. From people who will put on their Versace and Jimmy Choos for parties, sip Dom Perignon delicately while discussing politics and the “Plight of a Minority Community in India.” A quick detour into the past followed, when I remembered my grandfather telling me how, many years ago, when he and my grandmother wanted to rent a house in Ahmedabad, they were subjected to exactly the same treatment, except then the discrimination was more blatant, and not as subtle. My brains were scrambled, and there were hundreds of thoughts and feelings darting about. One of them was particularly depressing, made more so by the truth of it. Whatever we, as individuals do, to uphold fairness and justice, we cannot enforce it. No matter how many rules we make, or how many provisions we provide, its not enough. And no matter what impact we try to create in our “own little ways,” the larger picture remains unchanged. We can straighten lines in the picture, perhaps add a drop of colour to a bleak portion, but when looked at in totality, the picture remains the same. No matter how many books are written, films made, constitutions changed….the ugliness is inherent and here to stay.

…….And Idealism gives way to Cynicism…..

I suppose the best we can do is to rescue ourselves; and not allow ourselves to sink into the mire- because God knows; this country is neck deep in it!

Now that's the irony of a potentially surging country- Perhaps the third largest economy in the world. A country where people from different religions and different cultures have lived and learned so much together, juxtaposed. Drawbacks there are and indeed grave ones, but they are an eminent part of a growing system.
I know how frustrating it feels to loose sight of that one drop of colour, which might have taken a lot of effort to put in; which otherwise could have made the picture not so complete. However, the fact remains that the colour blended in, thereby showing how much it was needed and how much it was welcome.
Apropos, I remember you telling me more than once that running away is no solution for the problem at hand. You have a lot of substance that you have shown time and again; ergo, it’s time for you to hold on to it, steadfastly.

From demonic despotism to ideal cynicism...this post takes me through a whirlwind of emotions and at the end of it all,I stand defeated.Defeated to call myself an Indian, defeated cos my education breeds rationale and I cant do anything about it and helpless cos I am but just a silent blogger in cyberspace...
I come from a brahmin family and it is with great pride that I say that these despicable idiots who call themselves fundamentalists and upholders of the Hindu way should be taught a thing or two about our religion...a religion which talks about compassion and equality(pretty much the same way as Islam does)...
But I am not here to give a sermon about faiths and my digression in the above para should just be noted
as my abject anger to the situation. The fact is that we are still nestled in the dark ages despite the jimmy choos and the dom perignons...and I am made to believe by the writer that no amount of constitutional changes or moving stories will change the current scenario..
Do i believe that the situation will change and not lead an educated incumbent like me to the path of cynicism? I dont know...But i sure do know that education and the proper dissemination of information are the only weapons we have against these barbarians ...real education which makes a person think and rationalize and proper unbiased information which supports that thought process...
I live in my little world where nothing is more truthful than the spoken word and belief in the human being is not scarred by his or her religious choices...
I believe there is hope ..I believe there is light at the end of the tunnel...I believe..
At the end of it all..I stand today by you not as a friend but as a fellow human being who cares when the very foundations of my belief systems are rattled..not by these heinous humans but by the subservience that we have subjected ourselves to....Keep fighting

it's jus so shameful that 'we' who claim to be the 'educated' in the society are the ones who are still clinging on to these kinds of beliefs...and here I am in Turkey trying to tell everyone how secular my country is....cant really blame them of how/what they think.... the blog is a perfect blend of emotions and disheartenment ...but i guess we hv no choice bt to keep fighting against this immature behaviour...I am a hindu...and have been raised to treat all 'humans' the same and not do a market segmentation based on their religion for God's sake.. and I am proud to say tht my best pal is insi....u go girl...the blog says a lot and needs to be read by more sensible people to spread the word around

It does become depressing and at times it feels that idealism will give way to cynicism when one comes across a situation which s/he never anticipated even in the wildest dream- keeping in mind the cosmopolitan nature and liberal values of the city/country.

The chronic problem of mankind is that we prefer living in a polarized society. Be that religious, economic or intellectual. There is hardly any cross community/class social interaction. We all are living in our own ghetto-be that deeply religious or adamant agnostic, highly aware or completely ignorant, filthy rich or desperately poor. The ideological cocoon, no matter how absurd and ridiculous it may be gives us a great level of comfort and an illusionary sense of security.

In the course of time you may come across many more fearful souls who because of their assumed sense of fear from a community or a group will try to discriminate to gain their own security. In that moments of victimization just remember that they have nothing personal against you/your community or your group. They are just the hostage of a dogmatic belief.

I’m sure there are plenty of enlightened souls out there in the city, who won’t mind accommodating you in their rented place without bothering about your caste and creed.

You will get a roof soon of your choice! It’s not a horoscopic statement. It’s my gut feeling. It’s my belief in humanity.

Happy Hunting!!!

reading ur blog, a very sorry state indeed. people are shit scared, insecure and humiliating

carry on brave girl, you will find some nice place to stay.

O', a kashmiri muslim, and a very close friend of mine faced the same discrimination. I looked up advertisements from matrimonial and called people who said 'caste no bar' ... :) hypocrites!

I suppose the best we can do is to rescue ourselves; and not allow ourselves to sink into the mire-that is profound, right here right now. then there are collective realizations weaved into this!

Apparently, this hatred is a post partition thingy. I don't know too much about Gujrat and Mumbai, but in Punjab inter-religion marriages were quite common. Sad it is, but that is why we choose a friends that are like minded. If I was you I wouldn't be too sour about the issue. Imagine if you had got the place, and months later you realised that you are really welcome.

Discrimination is a trait that most humans, regardless of religion, display. Insi dear, surround yourself with people who love you or show the potential to love...Life will be beautiful.

...and let's not go down the Gujrat riots/Modi issue.

Very true illusions,
One can always face discrimination;
Gender, Language, race and color, age, etc kind of…discrimination, so what it is accept as it is.
Why you are discriminating Punjab from rest of the country?
I can see you, you deal a life with love and like mind rejection or discrimination, here at least you can make a gender discrimination to continue.
Know I will be rejected. Iam happy. :)

The boy who had written “caste no bars” on a matrimonial site was not a hypocrite (PJ), he actually don’t believe in caste and creed, actually he was a beauty discriminator, if he will go beyond his boundaries, he must have a beautiful, and intelligent reason to continue. Is your cast tends to lower limit or he had touched the upper limit? Tell your some beautiful discrimination here that rejects you from other well being that force to go ahead with you. Trust me, next time you will not get any reason to go on any matrimonial site, I can trust the people here, at least they are not cast, race and color hypocrite.:)

Nowhere is safe, and nobody is safe (Najam), love the people in anyway, but behind the wall..otherwise how much it will natural! That much rejection you will get from your society. Leave yourself or leave your society. Two ways to lead the life.:)

Beware Anupam, if khalifa’s read your comment they will get to know who you are, and you will be discriminated by anyway…anyhow.
By the way why are shouting so loud from turkey, we know she a true friend, with great cause.:)

Neo, why you are so much depressed to be born in a Hindu family. Neo what will you be in your next birth? Keep guessing…any guess from blogger world? :)

I started this year with lots of loss in sharemarket, during recent crash, and just because of Taj. Why Taj comment here as, India is a third largest economy of the world? Tell me! I think this blog was conspiracy against me. Anyway market will regain hope for the best, and cross your finger. :)

Sometimes you all feel good while discriminating you on the grounds of merit.
Aren’t you  now I can see the hypocrisy here? :)

Hey Iniyah we all love you, see how much long comment you get from your friends, these people are true friends of you with least rejection. Know we can see life is so much beautiful. Know you need a big hug :}}},

luv you, luv you all.

ola...so pleased to see your blog. sorry! i did not read it for a long long time. but will "hang around" more often.
it is not just shivaji park in mumbai. whereever modi goes, there were arrests. two young students from my college in Chennai where i studied journalism were arrested because they were both muslims. even with Karunanidhi in power (who is known for anti-BJP rhetoric), some 300 muslims were arrested because they took out a protest against modi.
and guess why modi was here? he was in chennai to launch a fortnightly funded by the congress party.

Your topic is old.
New one is “ M for Mumbaikars only”
Tandulakar, Mangeskar, Manjrekar, etckar..
What about Insiyah vahankar, they will definitely accept you.
By the way what this Raj Thakray and his notorious uncle Balasahab are doing with Mumbaikar. I wonder, check there ancestry details.

Raj Thakray has adopted the modus operandi of his notorious uncle to sway the masses in a wave of hatred against the outsiders, especially north Indians.

I think Raj is facing identity Crisis with his Uncle who have a larger than life image.

The formula is fool proof. It has worked so well in Gujarat, where Narendra Modi has poisoned the minds of a huge majority of Gujarati Hindus against the Muslims. The same can be repeated against the north Indians.
This is an inbuilt weakness of democracy, Grab power and make life hell for the minority.

Mumbai should be made union territory.
GovI should cut off all development funds from centre.

And there must be some ass kicking event for raj and balasahab thakrey type of people. List may include Narendra Modi ,Mayawati, Lalu, Amar Singh etc even Amitabh also... And sometimes mullah of mosque, for not integrating with nation Law, and making there own law (Sania Mirza don’t want to play in his homeland)

West is always Worst. Look at the history.
